Choosing a Divorce Mediator
How to Choose a Divorce Mediator
Choosing a divorce mediator is obviously a very important decision. You want to be sure to find a mediator that is professional and qualified to help you negotiate your divorce settlement equitably. Probably the most important part of choosing a divorce mediator is that both parties feel comfortable and equally represented. I do not view my clients as “just another case,” and it is important for everyone involved to feel like they have a voice and are being heard. I understand how difficult and emotional going through a divorce can be, and I approach each individual case with compassion.
My goal as your divorce mediator is to guide you both to your settlement in a way that everyone in the family can emerge healthy and whole.
Of course the idea that one mediator might be better than another is subjective. Different people respond to different personalities and communication styles, and certainly there is no “one-size-fits-all”. I offer a free consultation to help everyone become acquainted with my mediation style.
- Qualifications & Experience: When choosing a divorce mediator you want to consider the mediator’s background and specifically the knowledge of the laws for them to effectively mediate your divorce settlement.
- Fair & Unbiased: A mediator is meant to be unbiased. Everyone involved in the mediation process should feel comfortable and equally represented.
- Plan & Process: A mediator should guide you through the divorce process with a plan in mind. Even though you have a great deal of control over the outcomes, you probably want a mediator who has a process and a plan to help you move forward.
- Compassion: To many people going through a divorce can be scary and upsetting. Ideally you want the divorce mediator you are working with to be empathetic to your feelings & fears.
- Payment & Retainers: It is important for you to know what to expect when it comes to the cost of a divorce. A retainer is a clear concise agreement that spells out all of the details pertaining to the mediation including payments.
